Beale Street Landing 2016 BEST
Marina/Port in the World
The jury is in and Beale Street Landing is the 2016 Best Marina/Port in the World as announced in Architizer’s 4th Annual A+Awards!
The A+Awards is the largest international awards program focused on promoting and celebrating the best in architecture and products.
Beale Street Landing, designed by RTN Architects of Buenos Aires, Argentina, was initially selected as one of the top five in the category of Transportation under Marinas and Ports and was in the company of cities such as Barcelona, Copenhagen, San Francisco, and Bodrum, Turkey. Now Beale Street Landing stands alone at the very top of the category.
“This international recognition is an affirmation of the thoughtful design of the architects and the willingness of the Memphis community to embrace a world-class approach to riverboat docking,” says Benny Lendermon, president of the Riverfront Development Corporation.
The international competition had two components: a professionally juried award and an award based on public voting. The jury, comprised of internationally-renowned and award-winning designers, urban planners, and architects, selected Beale Street Landing as the most architecturally significant marina or port for 2016. The public largely agreed as the Memphis project came in a very close second to Barcelona’s.
Beale Street Landing’s win on the international scene underscores its importance to Memphis. “The dock at Beale Street Landing is not only the best one on the Mississippi River, right now, it’s one of the best in the world and that’s a primary reason the American Queen Steamboat Company, the American Cruise Line, and the French American Line are all operating here,” adds Lendermon. And European cruise line company Viking River Cruises has announced plans to join them.
The RDC recently announced that the annual economic impact of these dockings at Beale Street Landing is $36.4 million. This $36.4 million in economic impact equates to $4.7 million in local tax revenue, of which $2.3 million goes directly to the City of Memphis. These revenue numbers will be even more impressive when Viking River Cruises implements its plan to bring two overnight passenger cruises to the Mississippi River in 2018 and then increase that by four or more over the next two-year period. The tax revenue generated from those additional boat dockings could double what the landing is currently generating.
This is all very good news for the City of Memphis, for the Riverfront Development Corporation, and for the citizens of our community as is echoed by winning this award. The A+Awards will be presented at a Red Carpet Gala in New York City on May 12, 2016.
The mission of the A+Awards is “to nurture the appreciation of meaningful architecture in the world and champion its potential for a positive impact on everyday life”. Beale Street Landing is definitely having a positive impact on everyday life right here in Memphis and riverboat passengers from around the world are coming here to appreciate it.
